Omairys Rodriguez, Communications Coordinator, Stella and Charles Guttman Community College (CUNY)
I was born and raised in New York City and obtained a B.A. in Communication with a concentration in Public Relations and Advertising from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY, and a M.A. in Corporate Communication from Baruch College (CUNY). I am currently a Communications Coordinator at Stella and Charles Guttman Community College (CUNY). As a Communications Coordinator, some of my duties include managing content for the Guttman website and social media pages, formatting the President’s bi-monthly eNewsletter and providing assistance for publications and marketing materials, such as admissions brochures, print advertising, and the program books for commencement and convocation ceremonies. Pursuing my master's degree in Corporate Communication at Baruch was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Not only did it benefit me in my current role, as my coursework closely related to my duties at work, it also re-assured me of my career aspirations. The course offerings helped me in my writing, public speaking and professional development. I will forever be grateful of the connections I made with my professors and peers. |
Prior to working in higher education, I held various internship positions in different industries including non-profits, online media, government, congress, and the private sector. Throughout college, I participated in six internship programs in order to get a better understanding of what I wanted to do with my degree and with hopes of finding my future employer. I ended up gaining more than that. I earned college credit, developed skills I couldn’t obtain in the classroom, expanded my resume, and most of all, built my professional network. I am most appreciative of the individuals I met along the way, who are now, some of my mentors and close friends.
Some of my interests include public/media relations, higher education, social media, brand and website management, crisis communication, student communication, and non-profits. I enjoy working in higher education mostly because of the connection I get to create with students. I hope to start teaching an Introduction to Public Speaking course at Guttman in the spring.
Ultimately, wherever I end up, I hope to be able to wake up every morning eager to get to work, and utilize my skills to give back to the greater good. Everything I do in my current role supports the College’s mission to help students succeed and there is no doubt in my mind that I am exactly where I need to be. To current undergrad and grad students, I would advise four things: NETWORK, try new things, do what you love (that thing that makes you want to wake up every morning), and always reach higher!
