The Essay
The purpose of the essay is to assist the EOC and BCCGSA to link you with the most appropriate executive. The essay also serves as a means of telling the executive more about you so that s/he may be better prepared to assist you should you be selected for the program.
Focus the essay on three questions. Keep your answer to one paragraph for each:
- Tell us more about yourself. For example, what makes you, you? What are your interests, hopes, dreams, fears? How did you find your way to Baruch? What turns you on? Off? What do you consider your strengths? What would you like to know more about or have greater exposure to? This is essentially a word portrait of you. It’s your response to someone you meet whom you find interesting, and who asks you to, “Tell me about yourself.” It’s not your life in exquisite detail, but should cover the high points presented in a clear, compelling fashion. It’s broader than the summary statement in your resume. It reveals more of the whole you, not just the professional side.
- Tell us about your ambitions. What do you want to do next? How would you describe your next job? What about the longer term? Where do you see yourself in, say, 15-20 years? Think about more than your job. In a way this is your future response to “Tell me about yourself” written in the present tense.
- Tell us about your hopes for participation in the Executive Student Partnership program. What are your expectations for this program? What are your expectations of the participating executive? What level of commitment are you prepared to make?
Try to keep the entire essay within a page and one-half.
